Meet Rod Donegan
and his beautiful family!
Rod was looking forward to a promising career as a football
player within the Australian Football League. Following in his
fathers footsteps he was drafted to the...
...Collingwood Football Club. The “Magpies” being one
of the oldest clubs in our league. At 19, following a back
injury Rod required a spinal fusion and his football career
was over.
Rod found that keeping fit and staying on the move helped
to manage the ongoing discomfort, pain and stiffness that
resulted from the surgery. Having played footy since he was a
little tacker he had a firm understanding of fitness, goal
setting, determination and dedication that is required to
achieve results. He then turned his attention to marathon
running, completing 5 marathons, so far. Rod also began
helping others achieve their fitness goals and decided to take
the next step and start his own personal training studio.
From his own experience, Rod could see that training needed
to be maintainable and fun to encourage people to stick with
it. He also wanted people to focus on a healthier lifestyle
rather than just losing weight or looking good.
In May 1998 Fitness Zone Personal Training was opened and
has enjoyed continual growth and success. Many of the clients
that started with Rod in those early first months are still
with Fitness Zone today. Rod is able to enthuse even the most
reluctant client.
Many clients have entered fun runs, triathlons, Masters
Games, kayaking etc., all with the support and encouragement
of Rod, usually entering the events with them.
Rod and I met in August 1998 just as the business was
taking off. Rod was working flat out and in order to see each
other more the only solution was to work together. The
business continued to do well. Other trainers came and went.
The client base continued to grow.
Our beautiful boys, (our best achievement) Sam and Luke,
were born on 18 August 2003. It was around the time of the
pregnancy that we were both looking for a new challenge.
Our first priority would always be the boys so we tried a
sea change. We moved from the inner city to the seaside town
of Ocean Grove but we were still too tied to the Training
studio. When the boys were 2 months old we shifted back to the
city as Rod needed to be at the studio almost daily and the
travel from Ocean Grove (about 3 hour round trip) was time he
didn’t have.
While we didn’t want to sell Fitness Zone the amount of
time spent there meant Rod could not pursue other challenges.
Together with the time spent at Ocean Grove we both knew we
wanted the beach lifestyle so we decided to lease the studio
and shift to Redcliffe, Queensland. Once the decision to do
those things was made it happened very quickly. We once again
packed up our stuff and arrived here in sunny Redcliffe in May
2004 and are loving it.
Sam and Luke are now 14 months old and are into everything.
Every cupboard, every door, every drawer has to be firmly
taped up or locked. You know they are somewhere they shouldn’t
be when they go very quiet. They both enjoy a game of
peek-a-boo with each other. They love it when Dad plays footy
with then and shows them how to tackle.
Both like to have their nappies off and bath time can be
chaotic with one little bloke wanting to get in and the other
little bloke wanting out. They can say mum & dad and
something that sounds like ‘this’. They like it when they
talk and you answer them back.
They have so many toys but typically they want the TV
remote, the car keys, your sunnies or the mobile phone.
